Air India casual workers seek regularisation of services
Special Correspondent
CHENNAI: A section of casual labourers working for Air India on Wednesday submitted a memorandum to Chairman and Managing Director Arvind Jadhav, requesting him to regularise their services.
K. Arumugam, vice-president of the Indian Airlines Pattali Union, said in Chennai alone nearly 520 persons were working in the airline for over 25 years as casual labourers in various departments such as ground handling, engineering, flight clearing, baggage loading, security check, besides as office assistants.
The management provided them employment for 90 days in a year on wages of Rs.190 per day per person, apart from Rs.18 extra for every additional hour.
In 2002, the union had approached court, which directed the management to regularise their employment. In New Delhi and Goa the airline provided employment to casual labourers throughout the year. Accepting their memorandum, Mr. Jadhav asked them to wait for two months, after which steps would be taken to regularise their services.
