KOCHI: The inefficiency of the LDF government was responsible for the inordinate delay in releasing the aid for implementing the road project in Mulavukad, Dominic Presentation, the newly-elect MLA of Ernakulam, has said. Addressing a meet-the-press programme at the Ernakulam Press Club on Wednesday, Mr. Presentation said that the Goshree Island Development Authority (GIDA) had decided to provide funds for the road widening in November 2008. But the government failed to issue an order favouring the release of funds, he said. Reacting to the Cabinet decision on Wednesday to allocate nearly Rs. 8.7 crore for the road project, Mr. Presentation alleged that the government was solely responsible for delaying the project during the last four years. But he welcomed the government decision and urged the district administration to speed up implementation of the road project in Mulavukad. Admitting that there was a lapse on the part of the UDF’s election machinery to resolve the unrest among the Islanders against the political parties, he said that the party had lost nearly 1,000 votes following the decision of the people in Mulavukad to boycott the byelection. He said that the party could not explain the issue before the voters properly. Pointing out that resolving the issue of setting up a railway subway at Makkaparambu was among his top priorities, Mr. Presentation said that K. V. Thomas, Union Minister of State for Agriculture, has agreed to convene a meeting of stakeholders next week to find out ways to speed up construction of the railway subway. Blaming the LDF for its inability in stepping up the performance of the CPI (M) led Kochi Corporation council, Mr. Presentation said that the Mayor lacked experience in tackling the affairs of the local body and the district unit of the CPI (M) should have devised ways to help her in addressing people’s issues.
