Vasavya Mahila Mandali’s gesture to ART centre

Staff Reporter

VIJAYAWADA: The city-based Vasavya Mahila Mandali donated about 60 chairs and toys to the Anti Retroviral Therapy (ART) centre at Government General Hospital (GGH) here on Wednesday.

Additional District Medical Officer of Health T.V.S.N. Sastry said on the occasion that they sent proposals to the National Aids Control Organisation to construct more rooms and a waiting hall for HIV/AIDS patients. The GGH authorities were also requested to part with some more land for constructing the waiting hall in front of the ART centre. Dr. Sastry said they were able to provide treatment to the patients suffering from HIV/AIDS on the very first day of the visit as CD4 machine worth Rs.80 lakhs was installed at the ART centre recently. These tests were earlier conducted at Guntur. Dr. Sastry and others felt that the chairs donated by the VMM would be helpful to the patients waiting for their turn. As many as 250 patients visit the centre every day. GGH Superintendent P. Rambabu, ART Nodal Officer Satyanarayana Rao, VMM president and former MP Chennupati Vidya, noted physician G. Samaram and others were present. The VMM later organised an advocacy programme under ‘Targeted Intervention for Migrants Project’. On the occasion, Dr. Sastry felt the government and NGOs should work in tandem to reach out to migratory labourers.
