CHENNAI: Social and voluntary organisations should join hands with the government to ensure quality education for rural poor and downtrodden children, Governor Surjit Singh Barnala said here on Wednesday. Releasing a special postal cover to commemorate the silver jubilee of the Rotary Club of Madras East, Mr. Barnala said the role of voluntary organisations in taking education to the rural masses was pivotal. School dropout ratesTheir projects with the government had brought down school dropout rates in many States. The organisations should not stop at adopting schools; they must also develop concrete plans with the prime focus on higher education. The public-private partnerships would go a long way in effective implementation of the welfare schemes. Mr. Barnala underscored the need for inculcating a deeper understanding about the ideals of social service among youngsters and urged organisations such as Rotary to mobilise youth power in taking community service across all sections. Significant eventsChief Post Master General (Tamil Nadu Circle) S.K. The Postal Department was proud to chronicle the country’s history through postal covers and commemorative stamps. District Governor of Rotary International W. Anand listed the key projects taken up by various Rotary clubs. The Rotary International had played a crucial role in eradicating polio in many countries. India was one among the four endemic polio countries, and the number of cases had gone up to 560 this year, which was a perceptible increase from last year. Eradication of polio“The onus lies on the Rotarians to work together and eradicate polio in India. We believe in making education accessible to all and many of our projects are steered towards it,” he said. The Rotary Club of Madras East president J.
