Rs.3.45 crore spent under health plan

Free medical camp as part of ‘Bharat Nirman’

Seminar on Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan today


Kozhikode: Inaugurating a free medical camp organised as part of the Union government’s Bharat Nirman public information campaign on Wednesday, National Rural Health Mission district project director A. Baburaj said Rs.3.45 crore was distributed during the last two years under the Janani Suraksha Yojana in Kozhikode district. The Central government sponsored scheme benefited 44,456 mothers.

Dr. Baburaj said an intensive campaign to enlighten rural people about the significance of the scheme should be launched.

Specialist doctors of Kozhikode Beach Hospital and Feroke Primary Health Centre examined patients at the medical camp and prescribed medicines which were available free of charge.

Medicines worth Rs.50,000 were distributed by the NRHM to the patients at the camp.

Separate sections for general medicine, ENT, paediatrics, orthopaedics, dermatology, ophthalmology and Gynaecology were present at the camp.

The ophthalmology section was manned by specialists from Comtrust Eye Hospital. The camp and the public information campaign were organised by the Press Information Bureau.

A seminar on nutrition was held on Wednesday, which was observed as ‘health day’ at the five-day event.

Speaking on the benefits of a balanced diet, Annie Ninan, nutrition expert and lecturer, Unity College, Manjeri, said a balanced diet was necessary to lead a healthy life.

“Health does not mean absence of disease but it is also a situation in which a person in physically, mentally and socially alert,” she said.

Ms. Ninan said that repetitive food habits, attraction towards tasty foods, non-consumption of vegetables and fruits and dieting and starvation contributed to the absence of a balanced diet.

The seminar conducted at the Royal Alliance Auditorium, Feroke, was presided over by S. Subramanian, regional director, Directorate of Field Publicity.

November 12 will be celebrated as education day with a seminar to be conducted on the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan in the morning and a talk on employment opportunities in the afternoon.

Cultural programmes like Mappilapaattu, Oppana and Duffmuttu besides programmes organised by the Song & Drama division of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting will be on shown in the evening.

The five day event will conclude on November 14.
