LIC honours chess achievers

MADURAI: S. Rengarajan, a Life Insurance Corporation of India employee in Madurai Division who has represented South Zone for nearly 25 times in the All India Chess Championship, was honoured by the Regional Manager (Personnel and Industrial Relations) P. Annadurai during his visit here on Friday (November 6).

Mr. Rengarajan has been awarded the title ‘FIDE Master’ by the World Chess Federation. FIDE is the French acronym for World Chess Federation.

J. Chakrapani, Senior Divisional Manager, LIC Madurai Division, also highlighted the achievements of Mr. Rengarajan.

He became the first FIDE-rated player of Madurai district in 1983.

The Regional Manager also honoured K. Priyadharshan, whose father A.S. Kannappan is a Chairman’s Club Member Agent of Madurai City Branch II.

Mr. Rengarajan is also the coach of Mr. Priyadharshan.

Mr. Priyadharshan has won Asian Youth Championship 2009 in Under 16 category, Silver Medal in World Youth Team Olympiad in 2009 (Under 16), won 7 gold medals, 2 silver medals and 1 Bronze in his career.

He is also among the few Indian players to achieve International Master Title at the age of 16.

At present, he is representing India in World Youth (U-16) Championship to be held in Turkey in November.

He is also going to represent India in Commonwealth Championship to be held in Singapore in December 2009 and National Premier Championship at Mumbai during December 2009, a press release said.
