It seeks help to become an outsourcing hub CORFO team arrives looking for opportunities Bangalore: Chile, the country partner for the 14th edition of Bangalore IT.Biz, the three-day Information Communication Technologies event that begins on Wednesday, is wooing Indian IT companies to help establish it as an outsourcing hub in the Southern Hemisphere. A team of Chilean officials of the Chilean Economic Development Agency (CORFO), the Chilean investment promotion agency, has arrived here to explore investment opportunities for Indian IT companies in Chile. Speaking to The Hindu, Gordana Stojkovic, Programme Manager of the Investment Promotion Division of CORFO, said, “We want to establish Chile as an IT and business process outsourcing hub in Latin America.” Ms. Stojkovic said Chile has escaped the most adverse effects of the global recession because it had relied on domestic savings as a source of investment. “The taxes on the export of raw material such as copper have enabled us to sustain the momentum of investment despite the recession,” she said. CORFO launched the InvestChile programme in 2000, which aims to position Chile as a technology platform for companies launching projects in Latin America. It supports the establishment of software development centres, call centres, assembly operations and facilitates operations of biotechnology and life science companies, clinical trials and the development and transfer of emerging technologies. Ms. Stojkovic said Chile’s free trade agreements with 80 per cent of the member countries of the Organisation of Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) — the grouping of the economically advanced countries — provides Chilean companies access to global markets.
