Farmers forced to sell their produce below the minimum support price to private traders Rosaiah offers government support to the CCI for modernising ginning and pressing mills
HYDERABAD: Chief Minister K. Rosaiah has written to Union Minister for Textiles Dayanidhi Maran with a request to permit the Cotton Corporation of India to open more purchase centres allowing transportation of ‘kapas’ to nearby ginning and pressing mills, as was done last year.
In a letter on Tuesday, he stated that cotton farmers were suffering with loss of yield due to drought and were being forced to sell their produce below the minimum support price to private traders. Mr. Rosaiah offered government support to the corporation for modernising the ginning and pressing mills in the State in the coming year.
He further stated in the letter that ‘I was informed that the CCI has opened 17 centres so far for purchase of cotton under MSP operations during this year, against 48 purchase centres last year.
During your meeting at New Delhi the CCI authorities have agreed to open more centres only wherever composite mills are functioning, which will enable CCI to open only about 30 centres overall in Andhra Pradesh, whereas CCI has operated 73 purchase centres at 70 locations last year, " the Chief Minister said..
