Test team to be picked today

Chennai: The Indian squad for the Test series against Sri Lanka will be picked in Mumbai on Tuesday. The first Test of the three-match series begins in Ahmedabad on November 16.

Experienced left-arm paceman Zaheer Khan, who has proved his match-fitness in the domestic circuit after recovering from a shoulder injury, is expected to be in the side.

Senior left-arm paceman Ashish Nehra might battle it out with a much younger Sudip Tyagi for another paceman’s slot. Nehra has been consistent for India in the Twenty20 games and the ODIs while Tyagi could be an investment for the future.

The selectors are likely to retain pacemen Ishant Sharma — his form has been under scrutiny – and Munaf Patel. Harbhajan Singh and Amit Mishra should form the spin combination.

The selection panel, headed by K. Srikkanth, may also have to choose between wicketkeeper-batsman Dinesh Karthik and the in-form S. Badrinath for a reserve slot. M. Vijay could also be in the frame as an additional opener.

India last figured in a Test in New Zealand in April this year. — Special Correspondent
