‘Lucky’ break for city cueist

V. V. Subrahmanyam

Lucky Vatnani

HYDERABAD: A cueist from city taking part in the World Snooker Championship! Well, this was unbelievable till yesterday but now will be a piece of history when 23-year-old Lucky Vatnani features in the world event beginning in the city from November 14. All thanks to a ‘wild card’ entry, courtesy, Capt. P. V. K. Mohan, president of BSFI.

“I could not have asked for more. A world championship and in front of my home crowd,” exclaimed a visibly elated Lucky Vatnani. This natural talent who was only recently ranked India No.3 in juniors and missed the chance to play in the World (under-21) championship as the event had to be cancelled, is all geared up to realise his childhood dream. For someone who lost to 2003 world champion Pankaj Advani in the quarter-final of the senior nationals last month in Agra, Lucky Vatnani is in the mood to bring in a refreshing change on cue sports horizon in the State.

Fresh from his study-cum-training stint in England where he had the privilege of training in the world famous Sheffield World Snooker Academy, this Hyderabadi youngster reveals that he was the champion in the Inter-varstiy championship in England representing Sheffield Hallam University. “I owe everything to my sponsors Karvy Group for giving me unconditional support. It helped me study for four days and play snooker for three days in a week,” he says. “I don’t want to talk big. I know there will be expectations especially after my academy stint in England. But, to keep myself physically and mentally fit for the mega event I am training in yoga to be fully focussed,” says Lucky Vatnani.

This Hyderabadi simply loves to be natural, enjoying the game like his idol Ronny O’ Sullivan.
