NELLORE: Incessant rains since the last few days in the district caused severe damage to irrigation, agriculture, horticulture and roads with officials estimating the preliminary loss at Rs.46.18 crore. In all, 300 houses were damaged, paddy transplantation in 100 hectares was inundated and seedlings washed away in 500 hectares. Vegetable crop was destroyed in 60 hectares. However, no loss of human life and livestock was reported so far. About 9,500 handlooms got submerged in rain water and the officials put Rs.40 lakh as loss to Transco and Rs.52 lakh as loss for Water Works Departments. Breaches to canals developed at 200 places causing a loss of about Rs.10 crore. Around 40 tanks breached.
