Global film fest gets under way

TENALI: People of this vibrant town, known as ‘Andhra Paris’, are getting a rare opportunity to catch a glimpse of world cinema as the First International Film Festival being hosted by Tenali Cultural Film Society has got under way here.

The film festival, being held to commemorate the golden jubilee of Federation of Film Societies of India (FFSI) and the society chose Tenali largely due to the inspiration provided by Southern Region secretary B.H.S.N. Prakash Reddy.

Films are being screened at Asha Deluxe Theatre and Ramakrishna. Some of the popular movies which have been screened include the Chinese movie ‘Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon,’ and ‘The Choir’. ‘Slumdog Millionaire’ will be screened on Wednesday evening.

On Monday, an open panel discussion involving veteran film producer and actor Narayana Rao on ‘contemporary trends in cinema’ was held. Mr. Rao, while reminiscing of the golden age of Telugu cinema, predicted a rosy future for the regional cinema with the advent of digital cinema. He said that a crew of new generation directors was ready to experiment with exciting projects that would incur less expenditure.

Free screenings

The dark days of Telugu cinema, where the producer is at the mercy of market, would be soon over, he predicted. Tenali Cultural Film Society secretary B. Krishna said that all films being screened have been digitised and said that free screenings have been arranged for the benefit of schoolchildren.

On Monday afternoon, a German film, ‘The Edge of Heaven,’ and a Telugu documentary ‘Rallu,’ were screened.

The film festival, which commenced on November 7, would conclude on November 12. A host of film personalities, including Murali Mohan and Jamuna, would attend the valedictory function, he added.
