RVS, first batch IAS officer, dead

NEW DELHI: R.V. Subramanian, one of the first batch of 1947 IAS officers, passed away at his residence here over the weekend.

RVS, as he was affectionately known, was born in Kerala on August 1, 1920.

A gold medallist from St. Joseph’s college, Tiruchirapalli, he also had the distinction of studying under Nobel Laureate Sir C.V. Raman.

After a brief stint in the Air Force, RVS was selected in the very first batch of the IAS in 1947 and assigned to Assam cadre. Among the distinguished positions held by him over the years were Secretary Ministry of Energy, Government of India, and Adviser to the Governors of Tamil Nadu, Assam and Punjab during President’s Rule in these States. He also served for four years as Chairman of the Delhi Urban Art Commission and Hindustan Paper Corporation Ltd and on the Boards of several other companies.

He was closely associated with Malai Mandir (Murugan temple) in the Capital for over three decades.

RVS is survived by his wife, two sons and a daughter.
