BANGALORE: Enhanced legal awareness alone could bring in economic and social justice in society, said V. Gopala Gowda, Judge of Karnataka High Court, on Monday.

He was speaking here after inaugurating a legal awareness camp organised as part of the Legal Services Day by the Karnataka State Legal Services Authority and the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP).

Empowering women

The camp, held for women employees of the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) and members of self-help groups, aimed at empowering women before they are compelled to seek legal aid and also to help them use the information when they need it. “The citizens of the country should not forget that women’s contribution is very important in every field. There have been many instances where women have been suppressed yet they have (notching up) remarkable achievements. It is a long journey from 12th Century, from the time of Basaveshwara, to the 21st Century in providing social justice to women,” Mr. Gowda said.

BBMP Commissioner Bharatlal Meena urged women to be supportive of each other and not indulge in dowry demands and discrimination between children.

The inauguration was followed by talks by S.Y. Erannavar, District Judge, and Vinita P. Shetty, Deputy Director, Karnataka Judicial Academy, who spoke on various legal provisions concerning administration in general and women in particular.

Principal City Civil Judge and Bangalore District Legal Services Committee president H.S. Kempanna and Academy Member-Secretary Veeranna G. Tigadi were present.
