Do not scrap long-term plans

In response to last week’s Public Eye on Bad Planning of Infrastructure Projects, G.S. Narayanan from Jayanagar says:

I agree with the statement in one of the articles, which says that growth is happening first and planning is happening later.

But I would add to this ‘unplanned’ growth and ‘improper’ planning in addition to space constraints.

The first task of any new ministry is to subvert or put on hold all projects approved or implement by its predecessors. A long-term plan drawn up by permanent statutory bodies like the BDA, KUIDC, etc., should not be scrapped unnecessarily unless it is basically defective.

Pedestrian is lost in any of our town planning exercises. Any planner worth the name, could have thought of user-friendly skywalks because they were meant to be freely used by all: children, the elderly, and physically disabled. Anything more than ten steps is user-friendly providing thirty steps to reach the crossover it meaningless. If the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagra Palike (BBMP) can provide lifts it will be instantly user-friendly.
