Gold chain stolen from temple

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: A gold chain was stolen from the sanctum sanctorum of the Ganapathy temple, Vazhuthacaud, under the Museum police station limits on Monday.

The gold chain, weighing 77 gms, adorning the idol of Ganapathy was found missing around 6.15 a.m. when the chief priest had gone out of the sanctum sanctorum, the police said. A devotee reportedly alerted the chief priest to a gold chain over the deity’s face.

On verification, the priest found that a chain weighing 77 gms was missing from the idol. The black thread used for adjusting the length of the chain and a portion of the chain were found on the idol. Six other gold chains and gold ornaments adorning the deity were found intact though.

The incident occurred when the chief priest had gone to perform puja for other deities on the premises. At the time, there were hardly three to four devotees at the temple, located on the busy Bakery junction-Vazhuthacaud road.

The incident has put the police on their toes as the gold chain was stolen from the sanctum sanctorum when the temple was open. The police believe it is the handiwork of those who are familiar with the rituals and the functioning of the temple. The fact that only one gold chain was stolen has perplexed them.
