Call to strengthen Red Ribbon clubs

Staff Reporter

VIJAYAWADA: The Krishna District AIDS Control Officer T.V.S.N. Sastry on Monday emphasised the need to strengthen the Youth Red Cross clubs and the Youth Red Ribbon clubs in colleges across the district.

Addressing a training camp for teachers representing colleges that have these clubs, Dr. Sastry said awareness programmes must be taken up on a large scale to educate the youth on the need to promote blood donation and oppose discrimination against AIDS patients and a social evil like ragging.

The training programme precedes an awareness camp for members of the Red Ribbon Clubs, scheduled to commence on Thursday.

He said youth could play an important role in controlling a social menace like AIDS by informing and educating people about the banes of the dreaded virus. Dr. Sastry said following the training programme, these youngsters would fan out in villages to enlighten the masses on the need to lead a clean and righteous life.

Each of these clubs formed in nearly 250 colleges, consisted of eight students and two teachers. The awareness camps would be organised in educational institutions jointly by the college managements and members of these clubs, he said.

Lecturers drawn from various colleges attended the meeting.
