MYSORE: Tobacco growers in Mysore district have threatened to launch an agitation if the Tobacco Board fails to intervene and set right the downward spiral of prices in the market. Addressing a press conference here on Monday, the growers accused the board of being directly responsible for the fall in the price of tobacco. It claimed that the board was hand-in-glove with the industry to fix a ceiling on the price though the crop was auctioned in the open market. As a result growers were unable to recover their investment in the crop, they added. The farmers alleged that more than 10 million kg of tobacco was illegally cultivated by unlicensed farmers and had been purchased by the industry. This was one of the reasons for the collapse in prices it said, and held the board directly responsible for it. The board also drew flak for failure to implement the electronic auctioning system though it was beneficial to farmers.
