Symbolic start: Deputy Commissioner K.H. Aswatha Narayana Gowda inaugurating the Coorg ‘A’ Division Hockey League in Madikeri on Monday. Madikeri: Kodagu Deputy Commissioner K.H. Ashwatha Narayana Gowda on Monday hailed the contribution of Kodagu district in the promotion of the game of hockey in the country. He added that hockey was synonymous with the Kodagu district. Addressing the gathering at the finals of the M.G. Aiyappa Memorial Coorg ‘A’ Division hockey league at the Sports Authority of India (SAI) grounds here, Mr. Gowda lauded the “hockey culture” of the district and spoke highly of the numerous hockey players who had donned the national colours in various national and international events. Earlier, Mr. Gowda hit a ball with a hockey stick to signal the commencement of the match. He assured the Coorg Hockey Association (CHA) of all help and support to promote and game of hockey in the district. The finals was won by the Ammathi Sports Club from Ammathi, which defeated the BBC from Gonicoppa by a 4-0 margin. The winners led 2-0 at the end of the first half. Nitin Ganapathi scored a brace (11th and 53rd) while Sujith (27th) and Lala Aiyanna (68th) accounted for one goal each. Wanderers Sports Club, Madikeri, had organised the matches under the auspices of the CHA. The president of the CHA, N.U. Mohan Aiyappa, hockey coach C.V. Shankar, former president of the CHA Subhash Muthanna, president of the Madikeri City Municipal Council P.D. Ponnappa and secretary of the CHA K.B. Subramani were among those present. Palachanda Appaiah, donor, and Mr. Aiyappa, gave away the trophies to the winners and the runners-up.
