Staff Reporter

KOCHI: Counting of votes polled in the byelection to the Ernakulam Assembly constituency will start at the Centenary Hall of the Maharaja’s College on Tuesday at 8 a.m.

Of the total 1,43,091 voters in the constituency, 92,358 exercised their franchise in the election held on Saturday.

All arrangements have been put in place for the smooth counting of votes under the guidance of the returning officer K.N. Raveendran and assistant returning officer S. Jayalakshmi. District Collector M. Beena, who is also the district electoral officer, and the Central election observer Badari Narayanadas, inspected the arrangements at the counting centre on Monday.

Counting will be conducted on 14 tables. Nine-and-a-half rounds of counting would be required before the results are declared. Each table will have a counting supervisor of the gazetted cadre, a static observer and a counting assistant. Forty-two officials will be deployed for the counting duty. Training for these officials was held on Monday morning.

Postal votes will be counted first on the table of the returning officer. Postal votes reaching the district collectorate till 7 a.m. on Tuesday will be brought to the counting centre. The counting will begin after that and the first lead position will be known within 30 minutes. The result is expected before afternoon.

Officials deployed for the counting will reach the centre before 7 a.m. Passes have been issued to the agents of candidates. However, agents who step out of the centre before the counting is over will not be permitted back in.

A full-fledged media cell has been put in place to provide the progress of counting and the eventual result. Photographers will be permitted inside the media cell.
