Retired Dy.SP attacked

Staff Reporter

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The city police have begun investigating the alleged attempt to murder a retired Deputy Superintendent of Police (Dy.SP) at his house at Kunnapuzha, near Poojappura, early on Monday.

J. Somaraj complained that an intruder entered his bedroom around 2.30 a.m., sprinkled chilli powder all over his body and tried to kill him by tying a rope around his neck.

Mr. Somaraj, who retired from service two years ago after serving in many districts, sustained minor bruises on the mouth in the altercation with the intruder. He told the police that he resisted the attempt of the lone intruder to tighten the rope around his neck.

The incident occurred when Mr. Somaraj was alone at home, the police said. His wife is abroad and both his daughters are away.

The police have found that the rope and the chilli powder used by the intruder were taken from the house itself.

Circle Inspector, Museum, Dinil is investigating the case. The police were informed about the incident in the morning.

The police are probing all angles, including personal rivalry and enmity he may have incurred while investigating cases in service. The investigators are yet to find out how the intruder entered the house as there are no visible signs of breaking open doors or windows.

The dog squad, fingerprint experts and the scientific investigation team visited the house to gather evidence. A. Hemachandran, Inspector-General of Police, Thiruvananthapuram range, was among those who visited the spot.
