Focus on weeding out corruption

Staff Reporter

MADURAI: Corruption was prevalent everywhere, said Commissioner of Police K. Nandabalan at the valedictory of Vigilance Awareness Week organised here recently by the Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO),.

He said that while it was not so prevalent one or two decades ago, it had become the order of the day now. “Corruption is an age old thing and instances of corruption are even mentioned in the Sangam literature. Any act supported by a consideration is corruption,” he said.

Quoting from a book written by a former Comptroller and Auditor General of India (CAG), he said that corrupt practices occurred in various forms such as psychological, ecological, and familial. “This book says that no one is honest and above board. There is even an ancient proverb that says one’s deeds will always come back to haunt hi.”

“Family pressure is a major reason for people indulging in corruption. People now-a-days want to make money quickly and they lack discipline,” he said.

V. Vijayakumar, Regional PF Commissioner-I, said that EPFO had an active membership of over five crore nationally and touched the lives of nearly 20 crore people through its 24,000 employees. Comprising nine districts, the Madurai region has 20 lakh members and reached over one crore people through its 1,000 employees.

While EPFO covered five lakh establishments, both large and small nationally, the Madurai region covered 15,000. “Delay and keeping files pending for long are main reasons for corruption,” he said. He also announced that in a recent EPFO review meet in New Delhi, the Madurai region was adjudged one of the best performing units.

Abhishek Kumar, Regional PF Commissioner-II, said that the complex nature of corruption ensured that it continued to exist despite constant efforts to eradicate it.
