GUNTUR: Medical services at the Government General Hospital were briefly interrupted on Monday morning as junior doctors and PG students went on a flash strike, following a State-wide strike call given by Andhra Pradesh Junior Doctors Association demanding a steep increase in stipend. Government General Hospital Superintendent D. Phanibhushan said that contingency plans were drawn to meet any emergency. He said that a request to depute tutors and assistant professors from the Guntur Medical College was made and the District Medical and Health Officer was also urged to depute doctors from PHCs. The junior doctors said that they would hold demonstrations for one hour between 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. and if their demands were not met by Wednesday, they would take part in an indefinite strike. The main demands included increasing the monthly stipend for super-specialties doctors to Rs.36,000, P.G Doctors to Rs.30,000 and House Surgeons to Rs.12,000. The GGH presently has 150 PG Doctors, 125 house surgeons and about 70 in-service candidates. PG Doctors Association president Gopalakrishna submitted a memorandum to GGH superintendent listing out their demands. He also said that emergency and casualty services would not be hit.
