COIMBATORE: The Central Institute for Cotton Research organised a meeting in Chennai recently for cotton stakeholders to study the challenges and opportunities for cotton cultivation in the State. According to a release from the institute, cotton production in Tamil Nadu was on a small area and the yield was high. Though the State had an efficient research system and encouraging Government policies, the production and area under cotton was not increasing. Last year, cotton was cultivated on 1.23 lakh hectares in the State, which was just 1.2 per cent of the total cotton area in the country and the production from the State was just 1.7 per cent of the total production in the country. The participants studied the linkages among the stakeholders and the reasons for cotton cultivation not gaining popularity in the State. Farmers who participated in the meeting said labour scarcity, high cost of cultivation, low price for the produce and lack of assured irrigation were the main challenges. The researchers and Government representatives spoke about the initiatives and technical programmes to bolster cotton area in the State.
