Golden jubilee feat

The golden jubilee celebration of Madurai Ayira Vaisya Manjaputhur Mahajana Sabha Higher Secondary School concluded last week. Chief Educational Officer Rajani Rathnamala released the golden jubilee souvenir and it was received by G. Vasudevan, former president, Madurai Travel Club. R. Chokkalingam, president, Kaviarasu Kannadasan Narpani Mandram, spoke about the significance of learning in one’s mother tongue. N. Baskaran, president of the sabha, presided. N. Balasu bramanian, secretary, welcomed. S. Ethiraj, Deputy General Manager, Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited, distributed prizes to winners of competitions. S. Kanagadurgabai, Headmistress, proposed a vote of thanks.

Exhibition

Students of Rotary Laharry Matriculation Higher Secondary School showcased their creations at an art and science exhibition conducted last week. Kindergarten children had their exhibits made of paper, wool and wood. There were glass paintings, flower models and dolls. Senior students made thematic models on traffic rules, global warming and pollution, besides fire detectors, radar models, rain detectors and metal detectors.

Special camp

National Service Scheme volunteers of Madurai Nadar Uravinmurai’s Jayaraj Nadar Higher Secondary School participated in a special camp at Erkudi Achampathu. Activities at the camp included a free medical camp, conducted in association with Meenakshi Mission Hospital, in which 155 people were treated; a legal counselling camp; a sports meet; cleaning the road leading to the cremation ground; road repair and planting of tree saplings. Students were also involved in awa reness creation programmes on AIDS, drug abuse and chikungunya. The camp was organised by Programme Officer R. Ravikumar, Assistant Camp Officer S. Lakshminathan, NCC officer R. Ramakrishnan and Headmaster A. Balachandran.

Throwball tourney

Students of Madurai Nadar Uravinmurai Jayaraj Annapackiam Matriculation Higher Secondary School won the district-level throwball tournament, conducted recently at St. Francis Higher Secondary School, Tirumangalam, in the senior and super senior categories. The winners were felicitated at a function organised at the school.

Alumni get-together

The tenth anniversary of First Steps Play School was celebrated with an alumni get-together. The Directors of the school, Sumathi Rajan and Vivitha Arun, involved the old students in different kinds of activities such as rides, games, face painting, caricature, tattoos and mehendi. Fifty-five old students participated in the first alumni meet along with their parents. It was decided to make the alumni meet an annual affair.

Language expo

A science and language exhibition, ‘Scientila 09,’ was conducted at Maruthu Rukmani Matriculation School recently. The objective of the exhibition was to create awareness of advantages of consuming healthy food. Scientific facts of chemical, electrical and mechanical sciences were explained to the children through exhibits. Students and parents were also exposed to the importance of acquiring language skills, especially in English, Tamil and Hindi. A ‘Hea lthy Café’ was arranged in which food free from synthetic colour and flavour was provided. Principal R. Hemalatha organised a book stall to bring out the importance of reading habit.

Chess tournament

Students of Dolphin Matriculation Higher Secondary School won the chess tournament in four categories in the Republic Day Bharatiyar memorial sports and games competitions held for schools of Madurai educational district last week. Eight of the 18 players chosen to participate in the State-level chess tournament were from Dolphin School. Aravind Chidambaram of fifth standard won the under-10 title in the first Citadel International FIDE-rated chess series held in Chennai f rom October 24 to 30.
