Gujarat mulls over fielding Parmar

Special Correspondent

Ahmedabad: Gujarat has delayed the finalisation of its playing eleven for the second round Ranji Trophy Super League match against Tamil Nadu which gets underway here from Tuesday. And the reason for this is whether to include Mohnish Parmar or not.

The off-spinner has been under the scanner for illegal bowling action and the BCCI has spent a lot of time and expertise to correct Parmar’s action since he played his last first-class game against Uttar Pradesh at Vadodara in December 2008.

Remodelled action

On Monday, the 21-year-old Parmar bowled with a remodelled action to his teammates, including skipper Parthiv Patel, for almost an hour.

There are plenty of reasons for Gujarat’s consultant Aunshuman Gaekwad and the selectors to field Parmar against Tamil Nadu.

Parmar has been a match-winner in 18 first-class matches taking 89 wickets with eight five-wicket and two ten-wicket hauls. He took 37 in his first season and 52 in the second before rival batsmen and match officials began to point fingers at his action.

Decision deferred

Gaekwad might play Parmar, but has preferred to delay the decision until clarification from authoritative sources on a ruling that Parmar falls within the 15 per cent defect stricture. Seamer Amit Singh also falls in the same category.

Also, the umpires have been empowered to punish a bowler for illegal action from this season and it could be dicey for Parmar and Amit, should they be in the playing eleven.

Without Parmar and Amit, skipper Parthiv — who scored 83 and 76 in the opening match against Orissa last week at the same venue — marshalled his depleted resources to a 159-run victory.

TN has net session

While Gujarat mulled over playing Parmar, Tamil Nadu had a second net session arriving here on Saturday evening.

Thanks to S. Badrinath’s century, Tamil Nadu batted for a little over ten hours against Railways to take the vital first innings lead and three points.

Despite consistent performances, Badrinath has not been given a decent run in the national squad, even in one-day internationals.

Tamil Nadu would find the wicket here better to bat and bowl than the one it experienced at the Karnail Singh Stadium.

Abhinav Mukund (who is with the BCCI President’s XI) has been replaced by R. Satish.
