THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Sports Minister M. Vijayakumar said that the State Government has taken steps to restart the sports quota appointments in the Kerala Police Force (KPF). He said that 10 per cent of the total recruitment to the police force will be earmarked for sports quota appointment. The minister was speaking at a function at the Press Club to unveil the logo of the exhibition football match to commemorate the silver jubilee year of formation of the Kerala Police team. Kerala Police football team was a force to reckon with in the 90’s and had twice won the Federation Cup. The minister said that the Government will revive the police teams in other disciplines and added that the aim was to have a sports team in all public sector undertakings. As part of the celebration an exhibition football match will be played at the Chandrasekharan Nair stadium in which Kerala Police XI will take on Rest of Kerala XI. The event is being sponsored jointly by Thiruvananthapuram Press Club and NIMS Heart Foundation. Easy for BPCL, ONGCDespite playing at half pace, defending champion Bharat Petroleum and last year’s runner-up ONGC came up with effortless wins on the opening day of the 30th PSPB all-India inter-unit volleyball championship at the BPCL Kochi Refinery indoor stadium in Kochi on Monday evening. The host BPCL, a former National League champion and packed with many former Indian players including Tom Joseph and Kishore Kumar, brushed aside GAIL (Delhi) 25-5, 25-4, 25-5 in a little over half hour while ONGC, which has stars like former India blocker Subba Rao and libero Abhijit Bhattacharjee in its side, toyed with Chennai Petroleum, winning 25-4, 25-6, 25-12 in just about the same time. S. Mohan, Director (HR), BPCL inaugurated the tournament and E. Nandakumar, Executive Director, Kochi Refinery-BPCL, presided over the opening function.
