CHAMPION: The Don Bosco HSS team that won the inter-school basketball tournament in Kottayam on Monday. KOTTAYAM: Don Bosco HSS, Irinjalakuda, and Kottayam’s Mount Carmel HSS won the boys and girls titles in the 19th Girideepam invitational inter-school basketball tournament here on Monday. Don Bosco, after being level at half-time (31-31), broke away in the next session and defeated host Girideepam Bethany 71-57 in the boys final with notable contributions coming from Vinay Konikara (27 points) and Asif Ashraf (20). Mount Carmel toyed with Malappuram’s St. Gemma’s HSS 32-8 to win the girls title. The consistent Sona M. Saji was Mount Carmel’s top shooter. Fr. Jose Mariadas, Superior General of Bethany Ashram, gave away the prizes. The results (finals): Boys: Don Bosco HSS, Irinjalakuda 71 (Vinay Konikara 27, Asif Ashraf 20, Srikkanth Sasidharan 10) bt Girideepam Bethany, Kottayam 57 (Jithu Varghese Jacob 25, Lijin John 15). Best player: Jithu Varghese Jacob (Girideepam). Most promising player: Vinay Konikara (Don Bosco). Girls: Mount Carmel HSS, Kottayam 32 (Sona M. Saji 18) bt St. Gemma’s HSS, Malappuram 8. Best player: Sona M. Saji (Mount Carmel). Mini division (State-level tourney, boys): Girideepam Bethany 15 bt St. John The Baptist HSS, Nedumkunnam 9. Best player: Dixon (Girideepam Bethany). Most promising player: Viju Varghese (Girideepam).
