Corrections and Clarifications

  • It’s Gali Janardhana Reddy, Karnataka Minister for Tourism (Kannada and Culture, Information and Tourism) and Infrastructure Development Departments. The caption of the photograph that went with the lead story “Crisis over; Yeddyurappa, Reddys to work together” (November 9, 2009, page 1) had his name as Mr. B. Janardhana Reddy.

  • A Bench of Chief Justice K.G. Balakrishnan and Justice Aftab Alam issued notice to advocate Mr. Prashant Bhushan and the Editor-in-Chief, Tehelka magazine, Tarun Tejpal. The second paragraph of a report “Contempt notice to Prashant Bhushan” (November 7, 2009) said that the Bench consisted of the Chief Justice and Justice P. Sathasivam.

  • The sixth paragraph of an article “Indian disorder and English precision” (Op-Ed, November 6, 2009) called Venkatraman Ramakrishnan as the “2009 Nobel winner for Chemistry”. It should have been the “joint winner of the 2009 Nobel for Chemistry”. (The other recipients are Thomas A. Steitz of the United States and Ada E. Yonath of Israel.)

  • It’s the High Court of Uttarakhand (at Nainital). A report “Clean chit for Justice Nirmal Yadav” (November 7, 2009) incorrectly mentioned it (twice) as the Uttaranchal High Court. (We repeat the correction issued on January 24, 2007, April 3, 2007 and February 12, 2008 … Uttarakhand is both the new and traditional name of the state that was formed from the hill districts of Uttar Pradesh. The name Uttaranchal came into vogue when the then Central Government initiated a new round of States reorganisation in 2000.)

  • The expansion of TED is Technology, Entertainment and Design. The first paragraph of a report “Sixth Sense inventor to open up soon” (November 8, 2009) gave it as Technology, Entertainment and Development. (TED is a small non-profit devoted to Ideas Worth Spreading. It started out (in 1984) as a conference bringing together people from three worlds: Technology, Entertainment, Design. Since then its scope has become ever broader.)

  • It’s pianist Anil Srinivasan and vocalist Sikkil Gurucharan. The last paragraph of a report “TED talks start on exciting note” (November 6, 2009) had it interchanged — “vocalist Anil Srinivasan and pianist Sikkil Gurucharan.”
