PALAKKAD: A team of officials of the Rail India Technical and Economic Services (RITES) visited Kanjikode on Monday and identified land for the proposed rail coach factory. The delegation, headed by S.B. Malik, group general manager and M.C. Sreevasthava, general manager, inspected 150 acres of land on the north side of the Olavakkode-Coimbatore rail line and 140 acres on the south. Both sites, near the Instrumentation Limited, are owned by the government. District Collector A.T. James said that the team members expressed satisfaction at the location of the land in a discussion held with the officials of the State government. He said that the team wanted only 450 acres as against the initial demand of 900 acres. This is because the new project does not include proposal for a township. “This will help avoid acquisition of settlements for which there was opposition from some local people in Pudussery West village,” the Collector said. The remaining land will be acquired later. The team was accompanied by Usha Titus, special officer for the coach factory project. Earlier, the Railways and the State government had identified 900 acres at Pudussery West village. But, some organisations and local people opposed it.
