Federation of Indian Export Organisations president A Sakthivel (right) takes a look at the fabrics made in Taiwan at the Taiwan Textile Fair in Tirupur on Monday. Tirupur: Considering the need for diversification from the traditional cotton-based knitwear products, the Tirupur-based apparel manufacturers will explore ways to set up Joint Ventures (JV) with foreign companies to produce man-made fabrics on a large scale, according to Federation of Indian Export Organisations (FIEO) president A. Sakthivel. “It is now imperative for the exporters here to opt for man-made/synthetic fabrics for apparel production if they have to get business round-the-year,” he said. Textile fairMr. Sakthivel was speaking to reporters after inaugurating the two-day Taiwan Textile Fair organised by Taiwan Textile Federation with the support of Tirupur Exporters Association, Apparel Export Promotion Council and Confederation of Indian Textile Industry here on Monday. As a first step towards setting up JV units, Mr. Sakthivel, who also owns Poppy’s knitwear in Tirupur, held talks with Taiwan fabric producers for his company on the sidelines of the fair. Taiwan is the fifth largest textile exporter and a major supplier of man-made fabrics. Value-additionThe FIEO president said that venturing into apparels made of man-made fabrics would help the exporters in the country to come out with value-added items like sports-wear, fire retardant garments, technical textiles and swim wear, among others. Besides, it would give an opportunity to the exporters to cater to a wider market as cotton based knitwear products were consumed globally by only a minority vis-À-vis consumption of apparels made of man-made fabrics. Export targets“However, about 3 percent of the $4.7 billion worth of ‘knitwear apparel products’ exported from the country during 2008-09 fiscal is made of man-made fabrics which reiterates the need for diversification,” he pointed out. He said that with the popularisation of made-made fabrics, apparel exports from the country would be able to double from the present $10.6 billion by 2013. Textile fairThe textile fair showcases products ranging from functional fabrics, woven fabrics, denim to gloves made from Taiwan.
