The Tirunelveli Collector has launched a laudable scheme for removal of plastic waste from the city. Certain buying-ends have been pointed out, where the waste plastics are bought at the rate of one rupee a kg. If more awareness on the new scheme is given to the students by heads of institutions and households through the media and voluntary organisations, the residents’ dream of a plastic-free town would become true. E. Rajakumar Arulanandham, Palayamkottai. IIThis refers to the news report ‘Plan to make Tirunelveli plastic-free’ (The Hindu, dated November 8). Kudos to the Collector M. Jayaraman for his innovative plan to liberate the Tirunelveli Corporation area from the hazards of plastic wastes. As stated in the report the deluge of plastic chokes the drainage channels causing environmental pollution. The age-old practice of carrying cloth bags to the grocery stores and other shopping purposes has been given a go-by resulting in the usage of plastic bags. The public should cooperate with the district and civic administration to keep the city free from plastic wastes. To discourage the usage, the grocery stores and all other retail outlets should charge for the plastic carry-bags so that consumers will be motivated to bring their own cloth bags for their purchases. As a responsible citizen, it is our duty to protect the earth. S. Nallasivan, Tirunelveli. Dangerous stretchesThe stretches along Vickramasingapuram - Papanasam Road, the stretch near St. Mary’s Higher Secondary School and the stretch near Maruthamnagar bus stop are in bad shape for a long period. The dilapidated state of these sections has made travel risky for two-wheelers. Further at the Maruthamnagar stop the concrete drain, that diverts canal water to fields on the other side of the road, has collapsed. Though a number of requests have been made regarding this, there has been no response so far. As the monsoon has already set the incessant rain would worsen the state of roads further. Hence the authorities concerned are urged to take necessary action. M. Muralidharan, Alwarkurichi. Beyond religionsThe golden car of Sri Nellaiappar and Gandhimathi Amman temple, trial run took place on November 2. Thousands of devotees witnessed the trial run. The salient feature of the golden car is that it has been sculpted by two ‘sthapathies’ (sculptors) – one of them is a Hindu and the other a Muslim. The golden car is not only seen as a religious symbol but also stands for communal harmony. Congratulations to the two sculptors for designing the beautiful temple car. G. Purushothaman, Tirunelveli. Connecting linkThis is with reference to the letter (published on November 3) under the caption ‘Run services continuously,’ wherein P. Arunachalam of Tuticorin has stressed the need for a direct train to Chennai Central from Tuticorin via Erode, Salem, Jolarpet, Katpadi, and Arakonam. The introduction of such a train will serve as a connecting link for trains bound for Howrah, Ahmedabad, Guwahati, Muzaffarpur, Shalimar, Dehradun and Mumbai leaving Chennai Central between 08.45 a.m. and 11.45 a.m. It will be a boon to passengers from Tuticorin carrying heavy luggage. This train may leave Tuticorin around 4.00 p.m. and reach Chennai Central by 7.00 a.m. Will the railway authorities consider this suggestion in the interest of the public. P. K. Sankar, Tuticorin.
