Anantapur
Anantapur: Communist Party of India (Marxist) organised a massive dharna at the district Collector’s office demanding immediate payment of crop insurance to the farmers, supply of uninterrupted power to the ryots and assistance to handloom weavers in the district apart from taking stern action on illegal miners in Obulapuram mines. Tension prevailed for sometime as the police made efforts to disburse the CPI (M) activists who gathered in large numbers from all corners of the district. The agitators were ruffed up and forcibly driven away from the place after taking the leaders into custody. CPI (M) National committee member Gaffur, who addressed the gathering, came down heavily on the ruling Congress government and Chief Minister Rosaiah for failing to redeem their promise to pay crop insurance amount to the farmers even after a lapse of one year. The CPI (M) activists concluded their week long ‘padayatra’ in the district covering several villages to high light the problems of the people. The ‘padayatra’ culminated with the massive dharna under the leadership of CPI (M) district secretary Obulakonda Reddy. The police took the CPI (M) leaders Gaffur, Obulakonda Reddy, Town president Ram Bhoopal and others into custody and let them off after detaining them at the One Town police station for a couple of hours. CPI (M) activists organised rasta roko agitation in the town at several places.
