Kalamandalam awards presented

Honour: Culture Minister M. A. Baby presents the Kalamandalam fellowship to percussionist Narayanan Nambeesan at the Kerala Kalamdalam Deemed University for Art and Culture at Cheruthuruthy on Monday.

Thrissur: Cultural Affairs Minister M. A. Baby presented the Kerala Kalamandalam fellowships and awards for 2008 at a function at the deemed university on Monday.

Addressing the meeting, he said the lives of masters of performing arts were textbooks for the younger generation.

“The masters did not achieve overnight fame. They reached the top through hard work, dedication, privation and sacrifice. Their lives should inspire the younger generation,” he said.

The Minister presented the Kalamandalam fellowship to percussionist Kalamandalam Narayanan Nambeesan, which carried a purse of Rs.25,000, citation and a plaque.

The recipients

The recipients of the other awards included Chemanchery Kunjiraman Nair (Kalaratnam award); Kalamandalam Ramachandran Unnithan (Kathakali Vesham); Pathiyur Sankaran Kutty (Kathakali music); Varanasi Vishnu Namboodiri (percussion); V. R. Padmini (dance); P. V. Kunjikrishna Poduval (Thullal); O.K. Ambika (music); Margi Madhu (Koodiyattom); V.M. Kutty (folk art); K. B. Raj Anand (writer of the best book on performing arts); Vinod Mankara (director of the best film on performing arts).

Kottarakkara Ganga, N. Radhakrishnan Nair and Kalamandalam Mukundan received the V.S. Sarma Puraskaram, Mukunda Raja Puraskaram and Bhagavathar Kunjunni Thampuran Puraskaram respectively.

Kerala Kalamandalam Deemed University for Art and Culture Vice-Chancellor K.G. Poulose presided. P. K. Biju, MP, and Therambil Ramakrishnan, MLA, were among those present.
