Kasaragod: The president and vice-president of the Meencha grama panchayat near the border town of Manjeswaram were removed on Monday following a no-confidence motion supported by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Communist Party of India (Marxist). Grama panchayat president Koodal Abdualla, an Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) member, was removed after eight members of the 14-member body voted in support of the no-trust motion moved by two rebel IUML ward members. The motion was opposed by four members of the United Democratic Front — Congress (2), IUML (1) and Kerala Congress-Mani faction (1). While four BJP members supported the two IUML rebels, two CPI(M) members in the grama panchayat also joined hands while two from the CPI abstained from voting after the issue came up for discussion earlier in the day. Grama panchayat vice-president Shoba Somappa, a Congress nominee, was also removed in similar manner. — PTI
