Nagercoil: Normal life was thrown out of gear following heavy rains, which lashed different parts of the district on Monday. The school goers were put to untold hardship as the district administration had announced holiday for schools in different parts of the district only on Monday morning. The school students had to go to school only to return to their houses as the announcement was made only on Monday morning. All the rivers in Kanyakumari district were overflowing and the farmers in the tail-end areas had undertaken agriculture operations in full swing. The boat services to the Thiruvalluvar statue was cancelled on Monday following rough weather. However, the Poompuhar shipping corporation operated ferry services to Vivekanada Rock Memorial. The seawater entered into the residential areas at AVM channel (Anatha Victoria Marthanda Varma channel) and hence people were forced to move to safer places. The fishermen with Vallams and Catamarans did not venture into the sea in the last four days. The water level in all the tanks and irrigation ponds were slowly increasing and rubber tapping and salt manufacturing were also affected owing to heavy rain. The maximum amount rainfall received were: 42.6 mm in Boothapandi, followed by 39.5 mm in Surulode, 36.8 mm at Aralvoimozhi, 32.6 mm in Kannimar, 30.6 mm in Puthen dam, 30.2 mm in Perunchani, 28.4 mm in Nagercoil, 28 mm in Mullankinavilai, 25 mm in Chittar I and 20.8 mm in Chittar II. The water level in Pechipprai dam stood at 27.95 feet, 49.95 feet in Perunchani, 7.25 feet in Chittar I and 7.35 feet in Chittar II.
