Staff Reporter

TIRUNELVELI: A total of 2.34 lakh persons have been screened so far in 240 ‘varumun kaappom’ medical camps organised in Tirunelveli health district after the scheme was launched in the State, Minister for Environment, Youth Welfare and Sports T.P.M. Maideen Khan has said.

Inaugurating a ‘varumun kaappom’ medical camp at Seevalaperi near Palayamkottai on Monday, Mr. Maideen Khan said the health camps being organised by Department of Public Health had immensely benefited the public, especially the rural poor. While 1,827 persons were referred to Tirunelveli Medical College Hospital for further medical care after being screened at the camp, cervical cancer was detected in 30 cases and 32 were tested positive for HIV.

Moreover, ECG (9,959 persons), scan (11,648), blood sugar (28,380), cholesterol (17,878), blood grouping (6,227), HIV tests (11,439), sputum test (1,115) were being conducted during these camps.

“We’ve so far spent Rs. 12,98,752 for these medical camps and hence the rural poor should make use of these health camps. Moreover, they should also get the health smart cards to avail the ‘Kalaignar’s Insurance Scheme for Life Saving Treatments’ benefits,” Mr. Maideen Khan appealed.

The Minister handed over Rs. 6,000 each to seven beneficiaries under Dr. Muthulakshmi Reddy Maternity Assistance Programme and spectacles to 13 school students.
