There is a historical paddy granary at the temple of Sri Palaivananathar at Tiruppaladurai in Papanasam taluk in Thanjavur district. It is said that the giant Chola-built structure can store and preserve about 1,500 bags of paddy. It needs some renovation now. I request the authorities concerned to take immediate action. M. Parthasarathi, Thippirajapuram. Provide bus stopStudents of P.A. Vidhya Bhavan at Thalapatti village have been experiencing a difficulty in the absence of a bus stop near it. Students, especially those coming from either Pallapaptti or Karur are forced to alight from bus at Manalmedu and walk a long distance to reach the school. I request the transport authorities and the district administration to notify Thalapatti as a request bus-stop. R.S. Moorthy, Karur. Close median gapSpeed-breakers have been laid on Yagappa Nagar Main road opposite Don Bosco School and Oxford School. But owing to the gaps in the median, motorist, particularly two wheelers are avoiding the speed-breakers and take the road in the opposite directions through the gaps, posing a great threat to schoolchildren and to creating traffic snarls. Hence, proper measures should be taken by the traffic police to close the median gap. C.B. Venkateswaran, Thanjavur. Move hailedWe congratulate the authorities concerned for opening up the RM Hospital vacant land for parking, which we have been asking for more than a couple of years. A dormitory, rest house, cloak room, first-aid centre, auto-garage with fuel station and tourist guides should be provided to meet the requirements of tourists and pilgrims visiting the Big Temple, a heritage site. R.J.B. Frederick, Thanjavur. Eliminate toutsApropos the news item on Tiruchi Passport Office (The Hindu dated 3-11-09), I would like to narrate my recent experience there. The moment we got out of our car, a few touts swarmed us offering their service, which we declined. One of them offered to take us in bypassing the queue, which was also declined by us. We took the services of the ex-servicemen to fill our forms. The security system is so efficient that none other than the applicant can enter the passport office. Things moved inside the office in a very orderly manner. Scrutiny of applications was done efficiently and with the utmost courtesy. Unlike in many government offices, nobody approached us there to bypass the system. All the applicants patiently awaited their turn. We went for three jobs – a renewal, a fresh issue and an endorsement – under the routine system (not tatkal). Though we had to be in the office for eight hours, we left the office fully satisfied. To our sweet surprise, a new passport reached us within a week with an endorsement. The pertinent question is should the reputation of this efficient office be allowed to be tarnished by such unscrupulous touts operating in connivance with the officials or independently. The passport office and the police should join hands to eliminate such elements. M.M. Abdul Samad, Pandaravadai. Ensure proper announcementI reserved train tickets for me and my family members for a journey on October 23 from Tiruchi to Bangalore. Although the railway administration had attached one extra coach (E-SI) for accommodating the additional passengers, we were surprised to note that no coach bearing “E-SI” was found. I, along with my family members, had to run from one end of the train to another in search of this extra coach. Another shock was that the chart had been pasted on the wrong side of the coach, causing more inconvenience for me to ascertain our seat. I, therefore, request the Station Manager, Tiruchi, to arrange for proper announcement of the exact position of the extra coach as and when it is added. The chart should also be displayed at the boarding point. R. Pitchai Pillai, Karumandapam. Finish highway workWork on the Tiruichi-Thanjavur Highway has been completed in and around Thuvakudi. But, the one between Thuvakudi and Valavandankottai has not been completed so far. The delay in the execution of the work between Thuvakudi and Valavandankottai has been causing a great inconvenience, especially to two-wheeler riders. Will the authorities look into the matter? N. Alagappan, Tiruchi. Inconvenient sizeEarlier, motor vehicle Registration Certificates (RCs) were issued in small booklet format. But, now it is given in an inconvenient size. It cannot be carried easily. The authorities must be knowing that the RC is to be carried along with the vehicle for verification by the police at any time.
P.K. Raman, Ayyappa Nagar.
