Rytu sangham meet ends

BHIMAVARAM: The three-day State-level conference of the Andhra Pradesh Rytu Sangham (APRS), which concluded here on Monday, demanded that the government pull out of the Association of South East Nations (ASEAN) trade agreement.

Releasing the copies of resolutions at a media conference, APRS State president S. Malla Reddy said the treaty would spell a doom for the farmers raising cardamom crop in the country. Besides, it would also have an adverse bearing on the farmers depending on aqua and coconut crops, he added.

The treaty would open flood gates for dumping of aqua, coconut and cardamom products into the country from other nations at the expense of the interests of indigenous farmers, Mr. Malla Reddy said. In another resolution, the APRS appealed to the State government to explore the alternative sources of irrigation such as lift schemes and pumping of drain water so as to irrigate more paddy area in addition to the ayacut stabilised by the Irrigation Development Advisory Boards of East and West Godavari districts in the Godavari delta.
