Rain lashes Kandukur sub-division

Special Correspondent

ONGOLE: Heavy rain lashed Kandukur sub-division under the influence of low pressure area in Bay of Bengal on Monday affecting normal life.

Gudlur recorded the highest rainfall of 407 mm followed by VV Palem (353 mm), Kandukur (294 mm), Singarayakonda (280 mm), Ulavapadu (272 mm) and Pamur (262 mm) in Kandukur division. While Ongole town recorded 150 mm and Chirala town 80 mm, Santamagulur mandal recorded the lowest rainfall of 5.6 mm.

Rallapadu received an inflow of 15,000 cusecs at 7 p.m. on Sunday necessitating lifting of four gates to discharge water into the sea. The water level touched 19.6 feet as against the maximum level of 20 feet. As the inflow dwindled to 2,000 cusecs, the officials closed all the gates.

Directive to officials

District Collector Kantilal Dande visited Rallapadu project and instructed irrigation officials to remain vigilant.

Following discharge of water from Rallapadu project, hectic activity was noticed along the Munneru river bank. Fishermen thronged the rivulet to catch fish laying their nets.

As swollen Upputeru rivulet overflowed the causeway, movement of vehicles was disrupted between Kandukur and Kavali via Gudlur.

The APSRTC officials cancelled three bus services and diverted seven other buses via Singarayakonda, said its regional manager Rama Rao.
