Rain-affected areas inspected

Over 2,000 ha of cultivable land inundated

KARAIKAL: Chief Minister V.Vaithialingam inspected rain-affected areas in Karaikal along with V.Narayanasamy, Union Minister of State for Planning and Parliamentary Affairs on Monday. Over 2,000 ha of cultivable area was inundated.

Further, they visited the families of 11 fishermen, recently arrested by the Sri Lankan Navy, at Kilinjalmedu here.

The families demanded protection for the fishermen venturing into the sea. Mr.Narayanasamy stated that Shashi Tharoor, Minister for State for External Affairs, was apprised of the situation and that assurance was given to ensure their release within two days. He announced that the proposed National Institute of Technology that was sanctioned to be set up at Puducherry would be set up at Karaikal. HRD Ministry had sanctioned Rs.350 crore for the project, he said.

Later, a review meeting was presided by Mr.Narayanasamy and participated by Chief Minister V.Vaithialingam. Collector N.Vasanthakumar made a presentation on road infrastructural network through a western and eastern by pass and a ring road passing through all communes; the proposed merchant airport; Thirunallar Temple Development Project; compensation for land acquired for the Karaikal port; capacity building for fisher folk through a proposed fisheries training institute; and State Agricultural University status for PAJANCOA (Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru College of Agriculture).

A.M.H. Najim, leader of Opposition of Puducherry Legislature, along with MLAs P.R.Siva, A.Marimuthu, V.K.Ganapathy and A.V.Subramanian, president, Puducherry Pradesh Congress Committee were present.
