“Statue of Liberty”: Artist Chaitali Chatterjee captures the view from a ferry connecting Manhattan and New Jersey in this painting which would be up on display at the Delhi exhibition. NEW DELHI: Artist Chaitali Chatterjee, who has been taught by some of the country’s leading painters such as Manjit Singh Bawa, Bimal Dasgupta and Biswanath Mukherjee, drew her first art lessons from watching her grandmother draw rangoli. Her talent was recognised as early as her school days when she won accolades in many painting competitions. Inspired by what she saw during a short visit to the US two years ago, Ms. Chatterjee worked on a series of paintings which will be on view at the American Center here from November 16 to 27. Though the artist travelled a small portion of the East Coast, the people and landscape of the area impacted her deeply. The green wooded areas and calm beaches of Connecticut such as Greenwich, its quiet capital Hartford which was also home to Mark Twain and Harriet Beecher Stowe, the bustling and energetic New York City, the university town of Boston with its history-lined streets and parks, the charming settlement of Provincetown in Massachusetts and the whale sanctuary in Cape Cod were some of the sights that Ms. Chatterjee admired and has depicted in her paintings. Little Italy in New York, with its restaurants spilling over to the pavements and colourful umbrellas at the tables, finds expression in the painting titled “Little Italy”. In a painting titled “Statue of Liberty”, Ms. Chatterjee has depicted the view from a ferry connecting Manhattan and New Jersey consisting of the statue and the high-rise buildings of downtown New York. Ms. Chatterjee was trained at the Delhi College of Art. She has held over half a dozen solo exhibitions so far.
