KOCHI: The Swadeshi Science Movement is ready with its annual programme to inculcate the swadeshi spirit among the youth. From November 12 to 16, it will organise Swasraya Bharat 2009 – a science and technology exhibition at the Ernakulathappan ground. The programme is being supported by organisations like the ISRO, DRDO, AYUSH, DAE, ICAR, CSIR, Ministry of Earth Science, Coir Board and the Coconut Development Board. A. Ramachandran, secretary general of the event, said the programme will try to motivate the youth to strive for the self-reliance of the nation through science and technology. Premier institutions in the country will exhibit their innovative technologies during the five-day exhibition, he said. The 150th anniversary celebrations of Jagadish Chandra Bose, renowned scientist, will also be held on the occasion. Some of the other highlights of the programme include students’ meet, eco-meet, teachers’ meet, meet of the visually challenged students, seminars, and traditional health practitioners’ meet. About 2,000 students from schools in and around Ernakulam district will participate in the students meet scheduled for November 13. They will also get an opportunity to interact with senior scientists at the meet. Teachers from various schools in Ernakulam will attend the teachers’ meet to be held on November 14. Senior faculty members of the Cochin University of Science and Technology and other institutions will participate. They will also share thoughts on innovative teaching methods that could turn learning in to a delightful experience, Dr. Ramachandran said. A national seminar on remote sensing will be held at Marine Sciences auditorium of the School of Marine Sciences on November 16. Experts will talk on the immense scope of application of remote sensing in various fields. An eco-meet will be held at the Ernakulathappan ground on November 15. The aim of the event is to encourage students to show concern, care and love towards Nature. It will also try to equip them to keep a vigil on environmental issues. Dr. Ramachandran said that the objective of the traditional practitioners meet is to popularise home remedies among the public in general and women in particular.
