CHENNAI: An employee of a cinema hall in Thiruvanmiyur who was assaulted by a gang on Deepavali day following a quarrel over tickets for a new film succumbed to the injuries on Sunday morning. Six of the accused were arrested after the incident. According to Adyar police, Ponnaiyan (25) of Namakkal district was a ticket counter employee at Ganapathiram theatre on L.B. Road. On October 17, he allegedly got into an argument with Charles (28), Ilango (28), Kamal (26) and Gopal (23), all from Thiruvanmiyur, since they created a ruckus after not getting tickets for the film. They threatened Ponnaiyan and left, but returned later in the evening with two others Subramani (23) and Senthil (24), also of Thiruvanmiyur. The six men assaulted Ponnaiyan and fled after other employees of the cinema hall came to his rescue, police said. Ponnaiyan suffered severe head injuries and was admitted to a private hospital in Adyar. Police arrested the six men on October 18. On November 2, Ponnaiyan was shifted to the Government General Hospital where he died early on Sunday, police added. Adyar police have registered a case of murder against the six accused.
