Kemmannu (Udupi District): Coconut growers have urged the State Government to announce a support price of Rs. 7 a coconut. They were participating in a meeting here on Sunday, which was organised by the local unit of the Janapara Vedike. The market price for coconut had come down to Rs. 2 each from Rs. 6.50 in 2007 whereas the cost of cultivation had increased enormously, the growers said. Kalkuli Vittal Hegde, a progressive farmer from Sringeri said that the Government had banned coconut oil sachets owing to the pressure from large companies. He called upon the farmers to come together and fight for a support price for coconut. A Central team would be visiting the region on November 18, he said.
