Rains bring huge inflow to Periyar, Vaigai dams

MADURAI: Incessant overnight rain in the catchment areas pushed the water level in both Periyar and Vaigai reservoirs up abruptly on Sunday. Seven out of 22 rain gauge stations recorded over 100 mm of rainfall in the Periyar-Vaigai basin.

Inflow to Periyar dam, which was 11,382 cusecs in the morning, increased to around 14,000 cusecs, according to Public Works Department sources. However, the inflow to Vaigai dam swelled manifold from 2,230 cusecs in the morning to around 30,753 cusecs at 12.45 p.m. It came down marginally thereafter.

In the last 24 hours, water level in the Periyar dam rose by 4.40 feet and stood at 125.60 feet (permissible maximum level is 136 feet). It went up to 128.30 feet in the afternoon.

The level in the Vaigai dam which was 59.25 feet (71 feet) in the morning touched 61.30 feet in the afternoon.

In the impact of monsoon, the combined Periyar credit has swelled by 1,204 mcft in the last four days and stood at 5,979 mcft.

Gudalur recorded the highest rainfall in the region with 194 mm followed by Tekkadi 190, Uthamapalayam 137, Marudhanadi 122, Shanmuganadi 120, Peranai 104.5, Periyar dam 102.10, Sothuparai dam 86, Manjalar dam 85, Sittampatti 71, Madurai 69.20, Vaigai dam 65, Mettupatti 64, Veerapanadi 61, Kallandiri 58, Andipatti 53, Melur and Idayapatti 52 mm each, Thaniyamangalam 50, Sattaiyar dam 38.5, Pulipatti 35 and Kuppanamaptti 20.2 mm.

A two-storey residential-cum-commercial building near Thaikkal collapsed following steady rain throughout the night. Fortunately, all the 11 inmates in the first and second floor of the building escaped unhurt. “The building collapsed at around 4 a.m. minutes after all the inmates came out,” said former Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam councillor Bose.

The building, constructed along the Anuppanadi channel, was at least four decades old, he said.
