dated November 9, 1959: Eye corneas flown

A pair of eye corneas are being flown half-way round the world on November 7 in a race to save the sight of an unidentified patient in India. The New York Eye Bank for Sight Restoration acted promptly when it received a cable on November 6 from a former member of its staff, Dr. Byron Smith, now in Calcutta saying: “Urgently need two corneas.”

The Bank had two corneas already packed in glycerine in vials for shipment and they were put abroad a British Overseas Airways Corporation Comet jet airliner which left for London on November 6.
