dated November 9, 1959: Ayub Khan’s view

Preisdent Ayub Khan of Pakistan was on November 8 reported to have said in an interview that Chinese occupation of Tibet and road-building activities in Afghanistan posed “a serious threat from the North.” The Teheran newspaper Kayhan International said that in a Karachi interview the Pakistan President had told its correspondent: “The sub-continent will be vulnerable to attack within five years. Chinese occupation of Tibet and road construction activities in Afghanistan pose a serious threat from the north. It is a threat that cannot be overlooked by wishful thinking.”

Referring to Indo-Pakistan differences, President Ayub Khan was reported as saying that the canal waters dispute was on its way to being solved. The Pakistani President also termed the Kashmir settlement as “a final phase in the overall settlement with India”.
