S. Venkataraman passes away

S Venkataraman.

Chennai: S. Venkataraman, well known industrialist, chartered accountant and philanthropist, died on Friday night, aged 89.

Mr.Venkataraman was active in the freedom movement as a Congress worker and was noted for wearing khadi. He was the managing director of Chandrie and Company that before nationalisation was the managing agent of several power companies in the south. He was associated as a founder director in Engine Valves and later promoted El Forge, a metal forging, casting and fabrication company, and Kar Mobiles.

Mr.Venkataraman was the son of M. Subburaya Aiyer of Pellathope and son-in-law of Prof. K. Chandrasekharan. He was actively involved in Vidya Mandir as its secretary for several decades and was a trustee of the Venkataramana Ayurvedic Charitable Trust. He was also connected with the management of Vivekananda College and with the Sankara School to which he had donated his property in Tambaram.

He was one of the early golfers in Chennai and with a single digit handicap, served as the golf captain of Madras Cosmopolitan Club and of the Addicts Golfing Society of Southern India.

He is survived by his wife Chitra, sons V. Ramachandran and V. Srikanth and daughters Daya Balu and Subha Vaidyanathan.
