Heavy rain in Salem, Dharmapuri

A number of tanks register sharp increase in water level

Inundated: Sewage and rainwater overflowed from drainage channels and stagnated at Kitchipalayam in Salem owing to heavy rain on Saturday night. —

SALEM: Salem and its suburbs experienced moderate to heavy showers on Saturday night and Sunday.

The rain brought cheers to people in the city, who reeled under a scorching sun till last week. Cloudy skies brought the soaring temperature down.

A number of parts in the district received heavy rain. Several streets in the city were flooded and sheets of rainwater got stagnated on the roads. A number of tanks in the Salem and Namakkal districts registered a sharp increase in the water level due to continuous downpour.

The Puthu Eri in Kannankurichi, Kumaragiri Lake in Ammapet, Panamarathupatti Lake and a few other water bodies located near Salem city witnessed heavy inflow.

The district administration directed the officials of public works, revenue and rural development departments to remain alert and monitor the water level in all the tanks and ponds. The administration also instructed the officials to strengthen the bunds of water bodies and stock sand bags so that they could be quickly moved in case of breaches.

In the last 24-hour period ended at 8 a.m. on Sunday, Gengavalli recorded a maximum rainfall of 40 mm. Rainfall recorded in various other parts is as follows (in mm): Salem – 13.4, Vazhapadi - 17.4, Attur – 31.6, Omalur – 12.4, Mettur – 13.1, Sankagiri – 15.2 and Edapadi 13.

Krishnagiri

Heavy rain lashed Dharmapuri and Krishnagiri districts also on Sunday morning. It was intermittent rain from Saturday morning.

Collectorate in Dharmapuri recorded a maximum of 19 mm on Sunday morning. Harur 12.5 mm, Palacode 12 mm, Pappireddipatti 11 mm, Pennagaram 6, Dharmapuri 5 mm and the collectorate was 19 mm. Total rainfall in the district was 46.50 mm and the average rainfall is 9.30 mm, collectorate sources here said.
